Save Okon Joseph - Needs 9 million for Surgery

Okon Joseph at Olalomi Hispital, Ilorin, Kwara State

Okon Joseph Bright, an orphan from Akwa Ibom State, 28 year-old-student of History and International Studies at the University of Ilorin is suffering spinal cord injury and needs 9 million for surgery in India so he can pursue his dreams again.

His father died when he was three leaving him to grow up with his mother who later died of cancer in 2009 leaving Okon to fend for himself. He resorted to doing menial jobs so as to make a living. Okon sponsored his WASSCE examination from riding okada. He later got admitted to the University of Ilorin in 2013.

While on vacation, he traveled to Lagos to work so he could pay his bills. On December 25th 2015, Okon traveled to work and source for the fund to pay for his field trip to Olomo Rock, Abeokuta, Ogun State in 300 level. While waiting to take commuters with his tricycle, a car lost control and knocked him off. He was unconscious only to wake up four days after. He tried to get up from the bed but realized he couldn’t. He had spinal cord injury and had become paraplegic.

Okon was left alone with no family member to care for him. He was moved from Lagos down to Ilorin by one Mrs Sheriff from the legal department of the University of Ilorin in the hope that the university would assist with his medical treatment. He was abandoned at UITH as he couldn’t afford money for MRI scan. A man named Mr Kunle Ajayi introduced Okon to the SEAP Microfinance Bank Ilorin for assistance. For over a year and half now, SEAP in its magnanimity has spent about 3 million to take care of Okon’s medical condition at a time that his PCV was 8% (closest to death).

Okon has undergone 3 different surgeries at Olalomi Hospital Ilorin, Kwara State but he is still paraplegic - can’t control his lower limbs and bowels. Okon Joseph is now in need of 9 million naira for surgery in India. He is calling on well meaning Nigerians, organisations, foundations, the University of Ilorin, the Akwa Ibom State government and others to help him get his life back again and pursue his dreams.
